Have you started thinking more about your Fund for Teachers fellowship? How I will do this? What should I do to plan for when I’m back in the classroom? If you’ve had these questions, you aren’t alone. What if you could partner with someone who’s had the same questions? As our newest class of Fellows, we are excited to invite you to be a part of our Mentor Program. You will have the opportunity to work with a mentor – a strong past Fellow to guide you through your fellowship journey, and help you maximize your fellowship learning and support instructional innovation upon your return.

Right now, your fellowship may seem far away, or you may not even realize that a mentor could help you – but past Fellows have told us that they would have liked one to help them! If you choose to be a part of our Mentor Program you can get support in the following ways:

• Planning the details of your fellowship

• Working with someone who studied similar content goals to support your fellowship plan

• Refining how you will document your fellowship

This collaboration will empower you to identify and create solutions that will help maximize the impact of your fellowship for your students and communities. During the 2019-2020 school year, 2014 Fellow Leah Keith-Houle mentored 2019 Fellow Lauren Prichett in Chattanooga, TN. Leah designed a fellowship to work alongside scientists mapping the islands of St. Thomas, St. Croix and San Salvador and create with students a web-based, open source map incorporating STEM principles for hurricane preparedness. However, Leah’s “former life” as a bridge builder and geolgist for the state of Tennessee made her a great match for Lauren. Leah explains…

“Lauren is a 2019 FFT Fellow who examined the economic and relational nature of bridges across the United Kingdom to lead second graders in a parallel study of Chattanooga’s bridges. We are the River City and in less than a mile, four bridges span the Mighty Tennessee in Downtown Chattanooga. Lauren took all of the second graders at Loftis Elementary to see these bridges and had them point out the parts of a bridge, the decking, the abutments, the trestles, the supportive piers.. Then, I came to class to quiz them on their knowledge and give a presentation on bridges. Afterwards, students assembled wooden models designed and built in the Red Bank High School Fab Lab by my scientific research students. My students also made scale models for her class of the Walnut Street Bridge and the London Tower Bridge. As a Ramsden Fellow it was terrific that Lauren and I were paired up. This mentor program is one small step for making learning real in classrooms. Teachers helping teachers is where real collaboration happens.”
